Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age - Definitive Edition is a single-player role-playing game. The story follows a young hero known as the Luminary, a reincarnation of a legendary figure destined to confront a great darkness threatening the world of Erdrea. Cast out of his home after being branded as a bringer of calamity, the Luminary gathers allies across kingdoms and continents. Together they seek to uncover the truth behind his destiny, battle forces of evil, and restore balance to the world while navigating betrayals, revelations, and the weight of prophecy.

Gameplay is built around traditional turn-based combat. Battles take place in separate encounters where players command a party of up to four active characters, each with unique abilities and roles such as melee fighters, spellcasters, or healers. Characters can be positioned freely on the battlefield for cinematic effect, though placement does not alter mechanics. Standard actions include attacking, casting spells, using skills, or deploying items, and success depends on balancing offense, defense, and resource management.

Progression occurs through gaining experience points from combat, which increase levels and unlock skill points. These points are spent in a grid-based system that expands each character’s abilities, weapons proficiencies, and magical powers. Weapons and armor can be purchased, found in treasure chests, or crafted using the Fun-Size Forge system, which requires materials gathered from exploration or enemy drops. Equipment choices and skill development allow for customization of combat strategies.

The Definitive Edition introduces several additions and refinements. Players can choose between 3D graphics and a 2D sprite-based visual mode reminiscent of earlier entries in the series. Orchestral and synthesized versions of the soundtrack are selectable. New story events expand character backstories, and additional side content deepens the narrative. A photo mode, faster battle speed options, and quality-of-life improvements are also included.

Other enhancements include the ability to revisit past Dragon Quest worlds through special quests known as Tickington, presented entirely in retro 2D style. This content connects Dragon Quest XI to earlier games in the series, providing optional challenges and nostalgic references for long-time fans.
